'It looks like nothing was found at this location’
Sinds enkele jaren onderzoekt Debby Huysmans in het Boekenbergpark in Deurne een van de grootste artificiële grottencomplexen van West-Europa. Huysmans documenteert er hetgeen ze ziet. Ze verzamelt en conserveert beelden waarin het verborgene zichtbaar wordt. Een negatief wordt hier een positief.
Een analoog fototoestel legt niet alleen beelden of ruimtes vast. Zo’n toestel belichaamt zelf ook altijd een ruimte en die ruimte wordt hier zichtbaar, zo lijkt het. Ze stelt zichzelf tentoon in het werk van drie fotografen en een schrijver. Annelies de Mey vergroot in haar film en foto’s de paradox uit van een landschap dat oogt alsof er geen mens ooit naar heeft gekeken. Marie Snauwaert reageert op de negatiefruimte die opduikt in de tentoonstelling zelf en ten slotte is er Alfred, de hoofdfiguur uit W.F. Hermans’ roman Nooit meer slapen. In enkele fragmenten die Lars Kwakkenbos daaruit koos, verwoordt Alfred een landschap dat zo’n negatiefruimte zou kunnen belichamen:
Ik laat mijn ogen over dit eenvoudige landschap gaan, nergens door bomen versluierd en toch zo geheimzinnig. Het is kaal en maakt geen kale indruk door de talloze kleurschakeringen van de nietige planten, de mossen, de grote keien en de lege plekken. Er is niemand in de wijde omtrek en er zal ook niemand komen opdagen en toch kun je het geen eenzaam landschap noemen. Waarom niet? Ik weet het niet. Ik wordt bevangen door een vreemde fantasie: er altijd blijven, er niet meer weggaan, tot ik over een paar maanden insneeuw en pijnloos doodvries.
Het geheel is een bevreemdende wereld, een spel van licht, een poging tot conservatie van oxidatie, een wisselwerking van kijken en bekeken worden, het onzichtbare zichtbaar maken en omgekeerd, het perfectioneren van de imperfectie. Dit landschap wordt een error pagina: een probleemstelling of een opportuniteit.

En zo ontstond ook de camera obsura: Een spleet in de grot waardoor het licht naar binnen viel.
Nu, 100.000 jaar later, op zat 3 en zon 4 december zetten we de deur van het atelier op een kier en ben je welkom om bij ons binnen te gluren.
Verwacht je niet aan rotstekeningen, want de drie fotografen die we uitnodigden hebben een digitaal apparaat. Ze herontdekken de grot, het vuur en het woord, ze tonen ons het licht in het obscure, tijdens de duisterste dagen van het jaar.
Trek een warme jas aan, kom een kijkje nemen, een glaasje drinken & een babbeltje doen tussen 14 en 19u, tussen 14 en 17u.
's Avonds is er ook muziek: Dark Early Morning Night, een nieuw project van Philip Bossschaerts (frontman van Mintzkov). Gelieve hiervoor te reserveren want we hebben slechts nog enkele vrije plaatsen. Om 19u en om 16u.

“Every time I went home to my apartment on the outskirts of Moscow, I passed hundreds of waiting construction workers, mostly guest workers from Central Asia, involved in the construction of the 'Elk Island' block of flats. One day, I decided to take out my camera and capture the movement of my passage and my view, and to look back.”
- For the occasion of the 4th Moscow Biennale, Debby Huysmans stayed in Moscow for a short period at the border of the Elk Island national park.
Debby Huysmans’s (°BE,1980) poetic visual language mostly lends itself to rural, small pieces of marked out landscape. In Elk Island Construction Workers she wonderfully manages to translate her photographic ability to the Russian metropolis. Her landscape appears to grow smaller than before, as if she has succumbed to an inherent need of intelligibility.
A seemingly unequivocal, poetic gesture. Still, again this is poetry with a sting.
Shuffling and wavering, the photographer moves closer, subtle variations in the reactions become visible. Like a game, a classic game, between the maker and the portrayed, between intimacy, privacy, social order and gender. Fortunately, sometimes nature interferes, from behind the fence, that red rigorous fens.

SNOR heeft me te gast gevraagd tijdens de eerste SNORS DUMMY DATE.
Het maken van een fotoboek is doorgaans een erg solitaire bezigheid. Daarom roept SNOR de DUMMY DATE in het leven, een gezellige zondagmiddag waarbij we zes fotografen die aan een fotoboek werken uitnodigen om in groep en op informele wijze ideeën uit te wisselen over hun eigen boekproject en dat van de anderen. Bedoeling is dat elke deelnemer hierna met nieuwe inzichten omtrent selectie, sequentie tot vormgeving en productie naar huis gaat.
De eerste DUMMY DATE vindt plaats op zondag 14 december in de gloednieuwe Gentse galerie/bookshop RIOT. Speciale gast is de Antwerpse fotografe Debby Huysmans, die afgelopen najaar Late Spring uitbracht, haar eerste fotoboek bij Art Paper Editions en haar derde in totaal. Vanuit haar ervaring en expertise bekijkt en bediscussieert zij mee elke dummy.
VOOR WIE?
Elke fotograaf/student fotografie die op een ernstige manier aan een fotoboek werkt. Gevraagd wordt om op de DUMMY DATE een volwaardige selectie beelden te presenteren (prints of op scherm), een pdf van een eerste boekontwerp of – en bij voorkeur – een al geprinte dummy.
HOEVEEL?
Maximum 6 fotografen – we mikken op +/- 30 minuten per dummy.

Still lifes, scenes and landscapes of a kind of primeval place in Finland. During several stays at the Art Residency Mustarinda between 2010 and 2013, Debby Huysmans found herself surrounded by and brought into contact with the old-growth forests. Late Spring shows how the Belgian photographer uses the stories of different people to explore this magical place, this northern nature and its meanings. Each person with his own strategy, his own dream, philosophy or opinion, but all of them involved and engaged with these mystical surroundings. Walking, beholding, observing, telling and collecting, are just some of the methods used to clarify the mystery of this ancient woodland and the fables related to them. The result is a complex, yet poetical narrative about an ambiguous environment where nature, research and the spirits meet.

I’m very happy to announce my participation at Breda Photo where I will show my new work Late Spring.
This autumn, BredaPhoto will again bring the best of contemporary photography to Breda. Several photographers have already confirmed their participation in the festival. Among them are Tom Hunter and Todd Hido. The Dutch National Photographer of the year Koen Hauser will show his newest project. In addition, photographers Ola Lanko, Jan Rosseel, Bert Danckaert, Martijn van de Griendt and Eelco Brandt worked on projects exclusively for BredaPhoto.
BredaPhoto is a biannual international photo festival. This year's edition takes place between September 11 and October 26. The theme of this year's festival is Songs from the Heart. The participating photographers will show that many age-old, romantic ideals are still with us.

Inge Henneman van het FoMu selecteerde de afgelopen jaren voor het literaire tijdschrift DW B fotografisch talent, dat in een aantal fotokaternen werd gepubliceerd. In 2006, 2008, 2009 en 2010 selcteerde Inge Henneman als curator in residence van DW B het werk van achttien aanstormende fotografen voor de rubriek 'Jonge fotografie in België'. Ben Van den Berghe, Vincent Delbrouck, Lara Dhondt, Lot Doms, Pieter Huybrechts, Charlotte Lybeer, Michèle Matyn, Els vanden Meersch, Fien Muller, Arno Roncada, Dominique Somers en Katleen Vinck maakten voor Finisterre nieuw werk dat wordt aangevuld met beelden van Maarten vanden Abeele, Vincen Beeckman, Nick Hannes, Debby Huysmans, Ives Maes en Wim Wauman. In de fotografische galerie van deze aflevering gaat Inge Henneman u voor. Haar verwelkoming van de digitale fotografie gaat gepaard met een afscheid van de analoge fotografie door de Hongaarse schrijver Péter Nádas.
